After our Chapter's Director of Programming, Scott Huguenin, delivered the Meeting's opening address *, our Featured Speaker, UC Irvine's Dr. Jack Brouwer presented "Efficient and Clean Power for Data Centers from Fuel Cells". Dr. Brouwer moderated the Meeting's knowledgeable and diverse panelists (see bios below), discussing: "What is the Market Reality: What are Enterprises Doing, Benefits, Challenges".

Following the panel discussion, our Chapter paired traditional networking with complimentary tours of UC Irvine's Data Center and Fuel Cell Laboratory, led by UCI’s Ken Cooper and Alex Odyniec.

Dr. Jack Brouwer – Featured Speaker and Panel Moderator – Associate Director of the National Fuel Cell Research Center (NFCRC), is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, Lecturer and Researcher at UC Irvine.

Research – Dr. Brouwer’s primary research focus since joining UC Irvine has been high temperature electrochemical dynamics and integrated energy systems research that includes fuel cells, gas turbines, electrolyzers, solar and wind power. Dr. Brouwer is a highly recognized researcher in the area of alternative energy and is expected to make strong contributions to UC Irvine’s stature in the field of energy and the environment and to make leading research and teaching contributions to MAE and to the Environment Institute.

Edmund Elizalde – Panelist - Lead Electrical at Glumac, whose specialty is sustainable design. Edmund has over 35 years of experience in electrical engineering and design of petrochemical plants, aerospace facilities and data centers for colocation, enterprise and telecom companies around the world. His focus is the design of high efficiency and reliable electrical infrastructure using green technology that meets the business needs of the end user.   

As Director of Electrical Engineering at Equinix for over six years, Edmund had the opportunity to see designs from the point of view of a large global data center provider. Previously, engineering companies that he has been involved with are EYP Mission Critical, PRK Associates, Brown & Root and Rockwell Rocketdyne.  He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from California State University, Los Angeles in 1983.

Randal Kaufman – Panelist – is the Western Region Sales Manager for ABB, a global leader in power and automation technologies. Randal is responsible for full support of the sales process including project design, channel sales management, and product development for critical power distribution systems. His expertise includes design, implementation, and service programs for data centers and other mission critical applications. Randal has broad market experience, including commercial, industrial, medical, education, government, and hospitality.

Recently, Randal has had the opportunity to work with engineers, end users, utilities, and consultants on micro-grid applications. Randal received his Masters of Business Administration from the University of California Irvine, Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from California State University Chico, is a Certified Energy Manager, and has over 15 years of experience in the energy industry.

Darrell Smithson – Panelist - born and raised in the UK, joined Merlin Gerin UPS, a division of Schneider Electric, in 1989. He started his career as a Field Service Engineer after earning his degree in Electrical Engineering. Following four years of learning the UPS business as an FSE he went onto to do several managerial roles within the business as his career progressed. These included Field Service Director, Operations and Customer Service Director and Director for Sales UK and Ireland.

On the back of the APC and MGE merger, Darrell was presented the opportunity to move to the United States to set up the Service Sales team for NAM. After 3 years of establishing this business in the new merged organization, Darrell took on the additional responsibilities of looking after the NAM Business Operations and Strategy Development, building a Team that focuses on our future direction throughout the Americas. This team was very much involved in the Company Program CONNECT and was responsible for making sure that its future plans and direction were aligned with this. The Team also looked at market trends in order to ensure that the approach and offers remain very relevant in the markets served. In June, 2014, Darrell joined the Global Solutions team as VP Strategy.
